To get you better acquainted with the decorating process and how we work, we’ve compiled some frequently asked questions that most prospective clients want to know.
How do you charge? – For most projects small or large, we charge on a project basis, which is inclusive of our design services, furnishings, labor, installation, delivery etc. With multi-product design, we charge a retainer to initiate the process. While every project is evaluated on its own merits, for certain services, such as materials selection or paint consultation, it makes more sense to work on an hourly basis.
How expensive is it? – Working with an interior decorator will save you time and money!! The process of “doing it yourself” can end up being pretty exhausting and expensive. We make it simple for you. We are upfront with all of the costs and will work with your budget. No surprises! You get the benefit of professional advice with beautiful results, without the hassle of making mistakes or wasting your precious weekends.
How do I determine a budget? – Most clients simply don't know how much things cost, and need help determining a realistic budget range they are comfortable with. Because working with a decorator offers a high degree of flexibility, our goal is to help you create the look you desire within a realistic budget for your needs.
How long does it take? – Many variables affect the time it takes to complete a project. If you have a special event coming up or a short time-table, smaller scale projects can be implemented in 30-60 days. You can expect a “head-to-toe” room make-over to take 3 to 4 months to complete, once selections are made. Complex, highly custom, and multi-room projects can 6 months or longer.
Will you work with my contractors? – We are happy to work with your contractor or handyman. We can also refer certain tradesman, service providers and contractors, but you will make the ultimate decision on who to use. For custom made or installed products, such as window treatments, wall coverings, floor coverings, reupholstery, built-ins etc., our price usually includes manufacturing and installation by skilled craftsman or licensed contractors.
How do we select the furnishings? – We’ll come to you with fabrics, samples, photos, catalogs, schematics, diagrams, floor plans etc. to showcase items and help you visualize them in your space. We’ll step through the process together, with you choosing your favorites from several options I’ve selected that compliment the specific style we are going for.
What brands do you offer? – Through Decorating Den, we have access to an extensive, diverse line of high quality furnishings from leading manufacturers and specialty companies. In addition, we have developed our own designer sources and local suppliers. Decorating Den doesn’t manufacture or sell its own line of home furnishings.
Can I sit on the sofa or chairs? – Most of the upholstery is custom made and is not on display in a showroom where you can try it out. But don’t despair! We will discuss your preferences along with cushion types and materials, seating dimensions, styles, fabrics and the other determinants of comfort, to find seating that you’ll truly enjoy.
